Chapter 89 Sarah's pov.
As I sat across from Richard, a new resolve had settled over us both. We'd been dancing around these shadows for so long, pretending we could handle things on our own, that maybe the other didn't need to know. But I could see now how much I'd held back, and how much he'd hidden. If we were going to get through this, we'd have to trust each other completely. "Alright," I said, breaking the silence between us, "so what's the plan?" Richard looked at me, his expression a mix of determination and something like relief. "First, we get Martins involved," he replied.
"He knows enough about this kind of work, and we need someone on our side who understands the law, someone who can move quietly and quickly." I nodded, feeling a little weight lift. Martins was someone I trusted too. A practical thinker, level-headed, someone who wouldn't get rattled easily. If anyone could help us, it'd be him.
"When do we meet him?" I asked, already calculating how much twe had left before the network moved again. Every day seemed to draw them closer, and the sense of urgency was pressing down like a vise. "Tomorrow morning," Richard said. "He'll want to meet somewhere quiet, somewhere safe. Maybe at his lake house-it's isolated, and no one would think to look there." I agreed, and we sat in silence for a moment. It was strange, the way things had shifted. For so long, I'd thought I was protecting Richard by keeping him out of my investigations, and he had probably felt the same. But now, here we were, forced to rely on each other. And somehow, it felt... right.
The next morning, as we drove to Martins' place, I found myself lost in thought. I couldn't shake the unease that cwith knowing just how deep these ties went.
How many others were in it? How many people had known all along, maybe even helped James and Susan keep us in the dark? When we arrived, Martins was waiting by the door, his face calm but alert. He looked at us, nodding as we stepped inside.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt"Alright, you two," he said as he closed the door behind us. "Tellwhat's going on." Richard started, explaining what we knew about the network, about James's veiled threats, and how Susan seemed determined to tear us apart.
I watched Martins' expression grow more serious with every word, and when he finally spoke, his voice was laced with urgency.
"This isn't something to take lightly," he said, leaning forward. "If this network is as powerful as it sounds, we're not just dealing with a few disgruntled business contacts. We're talking about something far more systemic." I felt a chill run down my spine. Systemic. I'd known it was bigger than us, but the reality of that word hit hard.
It meant we were up against more than just James or Susan. We were up against a whole system of people who'd built their lives on secrets and threats.
"So where do we start?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
Martins glanced at Richard before answering. "We need to know who else in your circle might be compromised. Someone close enough to feed information to the network, but trusted enough that you wouldn't suspect them. Someone like..." His voice trailed off, but we all knew what he was implying.
Someone like a friend. Or a business partner. Or even someone in our family.
I felt my stomach twist, realizing just how many people that included. Richard's company was built on trust, on connections he'd nurtured over years.
Any one of them could be the leak. And here I was, thinking it was just James or Susan we had to watch for. "So how do we do that?" I asked, leaning forward. "We can't just go around accusing people. That would only make things worse." Martins nodded, thoughtful. "True. But we can monitor them. Set a few traps, see who takes the bait. And in the meantime, I'll reach out to sof my contacts, and see what I can find out about this network." It was a start, but I knew we'd have to be careful. One wrong move, and the network would know we were onto them.
As we left Martins' place, Richard looked over at me. "We can't trust anyone," he said quietly. "Not until we know for sure who's on our side." I nodded, feeling the weight of that truth settle over me. We were in this together, but we were also alone. It was a strange, unsettling feeling, knowing that anyone could be an enemy.
Over the next few days, Richard began reaching out to his contacts under the guise of casual conversations, trying to gauge who might be involved.
Meanwhile, I focused on what I'd learned from James and Susan, piecing together anything that might help us identify the players behind the scenes.
Martins kept us updated, but the information was scarce-whatever this network was, they were good at covering their tracks.
Then, just when we thought we were making progress, everything fell apart.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmIt was late evening when I received the message, a single line from Jason: "Someone tipped them off. They know what you're doing." I felt my blood turn cold. "Richard," I whispered, looking up at him, my voice barely steady. "They know." He froze, the realization dawning in his eyes. "That means someone close to us..." he didn't finish the sentence, but we both knew what he meant.
It was a betrayal, one we hadn't anticipated. Someone we'd trusted had turned on, O on us, feeding information to the network. And now, they'd be coming after us with everything they had. "What do we do?" I asked, feeling the panic rise in my chest. We'd been so careful, so sure we could stay ahead of them.
Richard took a deep breath, his jaw clenched. "We need to change our approach. Whoever this is, they're close. We can't keep going like this-we'll have to abandon the plan." He was right. The plan we'd so carefully crafted was useless now. We'd have to go back to the drawing board, and figure out who we could still trust.
For the first tsince we'd started this, I felt genuinely afraid. Not just for us, but for the life we'd built m together. It felt like it was slipping through our fingers, and no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't hold on. But as I looked at Richard, I saw the sdetermination in his eyes that had been there from the start. We might be outnumbered, outmatched, even betrayed, but we weren't giving up.
"We'll figure this out," he said, his voice steady. "No matter what it takes."
I nodded, gripping his hand. We were in this together, and as long as we had each other, I knew we'd find a NO way to keep going. Even if it meant tearing down the very walls we'd once built to protect us.
